Everyone is aware of the importance of competence for success at the workplace, in one’s career, and in one’s personal life. Without confidence, competence alone will only get you so far. Sadly, too many very competent leaders lack confidence.
It’s not necessary to change your entire personality to become more confident. Instead, you can make tiny efforts to increase your confidence and sense of self-assurance.
Here are some key actions you can take:
1. Step outside your comfort zone
- Participate in a project as a volunteer to develop new skills.
- Apply for a position that is challenging yet aligns with your passions.
- Go address your fear of public speaking head-on by volunteering to present or speak at an event.
2. Visualise what you seek to achieve
- Consider imagining yourself in the position you aspire to, for instance.
- Golfers are frequently instructed to visualise the path that the ball should take throughout their swing.
- You may instil that vision in those around you by seeing yourself in the position you want.
- Put yourself in character to gain a good start. Do you want to work as an executive? Be sure to act, speak, and present yourself as an executive.
3. Evaluate your abilities
- Make a list of all the abilities you bring to the table. Don’t forget to take into account wider skills that will benefit your organisation both today and in the future.
- The CEO of Cotential, Erica Dhawan, recently discussed the value of connectional intelligence at the Women’s Leadership Conference.
- According to Dhawan, connectional intelligence enables businesses to achieve ground-breaking commercial results by fusing the diversity of people, networks, disciplines, and resources found around the world.
4. Design your own environment
- When a workplace doesn’t satisfy your requirements, don’t leave; instead, change it for the better through your activities.
- Work with your colleagues in an honest and sincere manner, offering your skills with total confidence.
- By doing this, you will establish your own brand within your company and start drawing team members who share your beliefs.
- Your work environment will change as your team grows to include additional individuals who share your mentality.
5. Have others instil confidence in you
- People who are able to cut through bureaucracy and make decisions quickly are rewarded for having the confidence to get the job done.
- Raise your hand to tackle a few of these projects.
- Once your peers recognize that you are a problem solver, they will instil confidence within you. Having others reinforce this belief will help you realise your potential.
6. Be the change you wish to see
- When you’ve made efforts to increase your personal confidence, don’t forget to lend a helping hand to someone else.
- You may collaborate with others to bring about change through peer coaching.
- Choose a person who can observe you in action while you are working nearby.
- Give each other feedback on the strengths you have seen in one another each week.
- You may boost each other’s confidence by rejecting self-critical behaviour and working together to close blind spots. Even better, you’ll be assisting a friend in improving their career chances.
