Why today’s parents need to stop comparing their kids and learn about new career options
Excerpts from article by Praveen Parameswar, published in India Today
Leon Festinger, the proponent of Social Comparison Theory, says, “human beings do compare self (in this matter children) with others in order to reduce uncertainty in decisions as well as defining the self with clarity.”
Extending this observation to the psyche of parents, they have the noblest intention to reduce uncertainty in the life of children and define themselves with extreme clarity. A very bona fide objective.
This article is an attempt to explain why ‘comparing kids with others, especially in education and career planning, is increasingly becoming the new age poison’.
Changing career landscape
Education and career landscape is going through unprecedented changes. We need to prepare children for jobs that don’t exist today. Any decision we take for our children by comparing them with existing professionals or the current definition of success would not be appropriate for them to face various scenarios in the future
Limited Information Bias
Another major issue that occurs while comparing children with others is the possibility of Limited Information Bias, which is one of the strongest unconscious biases ever explored.
The people who we compare our child with would mostly be someone in our close circle or from popular careers. This limits our thoughts within our circle as well as to a very few range of careers.
This denies the opportunity for the child to grow beyond the borders.
Losing the spirit of uniqueness
A child reaches phenomenal success when he or she reaches the most suitable career that is in line with her uniqueness. Comparison with others and encouraging children to follow someone else actually make this possibility bleak.
People would take a herd route and reach the wrong places where they suffer badly.
Way forward
Choosing higher education and career for children by comparing them with others is an easy route for any parent. However, considering the disastrous impact this can have on children, it is important for parents to be more prepared to guide children to the right pathways and career.
As more than 74% of children turn to parents while choosing a career, parents cannot evade from this responsibility. They should learn and be ready to support children.
A very strong network with educationalists, policymakers, counsellors, coaches and teachers would also be helpful.
