8 tips to get your kids interested in sports

Excerpts from article published in Qrius

One of the best ways to incorporate good habits into your kids’ lives is getting them interested in sports. However, it is not an easy thing to do in the current age. With smartphones and video games, it might be hard to convince your kids that sports are fun. Let us help you with your problem.

If you want to get your children to play a football game rather than watch TV, read on.

1. Find what they enjoy

Your children will not like sports which they don’t find interesting. First of all, you have to find out what your children love doing. Is it reading? You can try getting them some books related to sports to get them interested. Alternatively, you could choose another approach e.g. watch live baseball stream with them and see if they find it fascinating or not quite. Moreover, you should make sure that your children see you being active as well.

2. Get them enrolled in a programme

This is one of the best ways to make sure your kids take up a sport that they like. Look at their school district or city’s website to find out if there are any programmes available for kids interested in sports. If not, there are still other options. Look for local sports programmes, community centres and other places where kids can learn about sports. If you find any, enroll your child there.

3. Be a good example

Kids will always follow your example. Therefore, the first thing that you must do is make yourself an active person. Always keep yourself busy with something and make sure that your body stays very healthy. You should also encourage your children to do the same.

4. Watch them play

If you have been trying to get your kids into a sport, you should watch them play it. It will also boost their confidence and encourage them to play more. Regularly attend their games and training sessions, so you can be there to support them through thick and thin. It is also a great way to spend time with your kids.

5. Set realistic goals

It is common for parents to expect their children to perform very well when playing a sport. There is nothing wrong with wanting your children to become good at sports, but don’t expect too much from them. We are not saying that you should not push your kids to be better, but don’t set unrealistic goals for them. Kids will eventually get frustrated if they feel that they can’t meet your expectations. So always set goals that are achievable for them at their current level of skill.

6. Give them space and freedom

Never force your children into playing a sport if they don’t like it or if they are not interested in it. They will just stop taking interest in a particular sport if you force them and it will make them dislike the sport even more. Instead, allow your children to choose whichever sports they like and encourage them to follow it through. If they are not interested in playing a particular sport, don’t force them into it.

7. Look for useful apps

There are many useful mobile apps that provide information about various sports to help parents like you find something that your kids might be interested in. They can be very useful if you don’t know what sports suit the age and level of your kids. Some apps also help guide parents to improve skills of their kids in sports through proper exercise programmes and training methods.

8. Encourage them to try different sports

Sometimes, it is hard for kids to find a sport that they love because they don’t know about different sports out there, and some kids might be shy. In such cases, encourage your kids to try different sports until they find something that they like the most and then take an interest in it from there on. This way, you can help them explore more opportunities and have some fun in the process too!

Master the virtual space

Excerpts from article by Hari Krishnan Nair , published in The Hindu

With increasing Internet penetration in India, organisations are investing heavily in digital marketing tools to increase brand visibility and connect with their audience. According to a Goldman Sachs report, the Indian Internet industry will be worth $160 billion by 2025. Since digital marketing is at its nascent stage, most experts in the current workforce are self-taught. In such an environment, it can be difficult for young graduates and freshers to figure out how to start and carve a successful career in this domain.

Here are some tips:

1. Identify if it is suitable for you

First, develop an interest in this domain. Young learners can always find the basic digital marketing terminology on blog posts, digital marketing forums, social media and YouTube. It may help them understand whether or not these concepts are exciting and if they are motivated to take it up as a career.

2. Invest in a robust online certification programme

The next step is to apply for a programme in digital marketing to build a foundation. Not only will it help get the required expertise and industry knowledge, but also a better insight about the domain and its future prospects.

3. Build a good portfolio

This is in addition to the qualifications. A digital marketing portfolio can be built even while pursuing relevant programmes – as freelancing, during an internship, or while setting up a website as part of capstone projects.

4. Understanding analytics

The principal component of launching a digital marketing campaign is to be able to judge the way it affects the traffic towards the potential employer’s website or sales towards their products. This helps translate consumer behaviour into actionable business data. Therefore, learners need to understand social media metrics and Google Analytics and be fluent in using tools such as SEMrush to track the numbers that will help them improve future campaigns.

5. Find one’s niche

Working on different projects across industries will help figure out one’s long-term career. Finding a pathway early in their career can help freshers and aspirants position themselves as specialists.

6. Stay up-to-date

Organisations that used to be heavily dependent on traditional mediums are now making big bets on digital and social mediums. With the speed at which the digital footprint and technology are expanding, one needs to continue to learn and keep abreast with latest tools and techniques for a successful career.
